Wanderlust

Wanderlust

Choreographer's Note: Wanderlust was inspired by Anton Chekhov's short story 'The Lovers', later published as 'The Huntsman'. When I approached the dancers to make this work, I did not want to do a piece which would be a ballet version of the story - I wanted to bring out an abstract and poetic retelling of this unrequited love story. Both the story and the ballet are meant to be a quick glimpse into these lives - for we have no right to eavesdrop on their sorrow.
Composed approximately 100 years prior to Chekhov’s writing, Schubert's Piano Sonata in D Major may at first seem an odd choice for a Chekhov ballet. However I hear in this music a resigned melancholy, reminiscing of a time past, which resonates with the original story.

“I don't understand anything about the ballet; all I know is that during the intervals the ballerinas stink like horses.”
Anton Chekhov, 1860-1904
