Choreographer's Note: In creating this piece I began with the Biblical story of Zacharias, whom an angel struck mute in retribution for Zacharias’s doubt that the Lord would bring him a child. But as the piece developed, it became increasingly abstract: while the woman - initially the angel - continues to project a religious significance, the man is at times inanimate. It becomes clear that she is no longer a disembodied guardian angel, but their relationship remains one of superior and inferior. Their interaction is always on unequal footing: while the man is at times a pedestal used to display his partner’s beauty, the woman evolves from ethereal spirit to ever-changing female archetype, retaining at all points only a different, and unequal, awareness.
