Miro Magloire's New Chamber Ballet will present "Italian Evening," a program of ballets to music by Italian composers, from the Baroque to the present - Luciana Berio, Luigi Dallapiccola, Arcangelo Corelli, and Giuseppe Tartini, March 23 & 24, 8:30 PM, at the City Center Studio 4.

Magloire has been praised for his exceptional musicality, having begun his career as a musician and composer. Jennifer Dunning, in her New York Times review, wrote that "Mr. Magloire's pieces felt like conversations with the music." (September 26, 2006) Commenting on his choices for the March performances, Magloire notes "The music from these composers is torn between strict composition, a subtle sensuality and extreme emotional outbursts." Inspired by these contrasts, reflected in the use of violin and piano as instruments, Magloire created four plotless ballets that pay tribute to the composers' artistry. In each of the ballets, two or three dancers weave in and out of extended solos and duets that echo the music's very personal, vibrant spirit - a spirit so typical of Italian music."

The program will feature the world premiere of "Follia," - a trio to Corelli's Violin Sonata op. 5 no 12.

Another theme inspires the names of the program's other three ballets: Lace, Velvet, and Silk.

Lace received its premiere at the company's February performances. The women's trio is set to Berio's Sequenza VIII for solo violin, a virtuoso violin work composed as an hommage to Bach's famous Chaconne.

In his review of Silk, danced to Tartini's Sonata VII for solo violin, Joel Lobenthal remarked that "Mr. Magloire seeded his piece with references to Balanchine's Apollo and its three muses, that provided a platform for his own imaginative variations." (New York Sun, September 25, 2006)

Velvet is danced to Luigi Dallapiccola's Tartiniana Seconda for violin and piano. The duet will be danced by company member Lauren Toole (formerly with NYCB) and Damien Johnson (formerly with Dance Theatre of Harlem).
