Miro Magloire will present his New Chamber Ballet in a program of ballets by Magloire and guest choreographer Deborah Lohse, Feb. 2 & 3, 8:30 PM, in City Center Studio 4. As always, the dances will have live accompaniment by violinist Erik Carlson and pianist Melody Fader.
Receiving its World Premiere is "Night is Falling" by guest choreographer Deborah Lohse. The women's trio will be danced to music by David Lang ("Vent" for piano and violin, and "This Was Written By Hand" for piano). Lohse blends contemporary ballet (on pointe) with a freer movement language to tell a disquieting tale of an encounter of three women. While there is never a clear narrative, there are strong hints of attacking, hiding and defending.
For this third program of New Chamber Ballet's 2006-07 season, director Miro Magloire will premiere a new, as yet untitled, ballet to Luciano Berio's "Sequenza VIII for solo violin," a virtuoso violin work composed as an hommage to Bach's famous "Chaconne." The women's trio will be danced by Christin Hanna, Lauren Toole (named a dancer to watch in a recent Pointe Magazine), and new company member Emily SoRelle. Trained at the Kirov Academy in D.C., among others, Emily has danced with the Washington Ballet and Ballet Austin. Since moving to NYC, she has performed with the Eglevsky Ballet, Rebecca Kelly Ballet, and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet.
The program will be completed by two Magloire works: "Silk," a trio set to Giuseppe Tartini"s Sonata VIII for solo violin; and "Mostly Soft," to music by Franz Schubert.
Miro Magloire began his career as a musician and composer, and his sophisticated musicality was noted by Jennifer Dunning, who observed that his "three pieces felt like conversations with the music." (The New York Times, September 26, 2006). Writing in The New York Sun, September 25, 2006, Joel Lobenthal noted that "the New Chamber Ballet has already carved out its own niche."
